| USEL have been showcasing its attributes in Europe and urging other countries to follow suit. The Skills Training for Employment Progression (STEP) programme was thrust into the spotlight at the 6th bi-annual Conference of the European Union of Supported Employment in Finland. The Managers of STEP, a partnership between USEL and Shankill Open Learning Centre, were invited to the prestigious event to make a presentation on the unique programme. It is hoped that other European countries will be inspired by the initiative's success and consider implementing similiar schemes within their own countries. The 3 day event was organised to celebrate the European Year of Disabled People through its theme of 'Empowering People and Societies in Supported Employment' The 470 delegates, representing every European Country along with USA and Australia had the chance to be introduced to the Ulster-born initiative. The STEP Programme was developed under the framework of the EU Building Sustainable Prosperity Programme with the aim of assisting USEL's employees with disabilities to acquire a range of essential work and life skills to enghance their personal development and career choices. The two organisations have developed an effective partnership to ensure the success of the local programme, which has seen 60 participants benefit from continuous on-site learning support throgh career coaching and training sessions.
